Brief

  • Port Blair, officially Sri Vijaya Puram, is the main gateway to the Andaman Islands and the usual base for visiting Cellular Jail, Ross Island and nearby beaches.
  • Try local seafood such as fish curry, grilled or curried prawns, crab, and coconut-based dishes. Use established restaurants for raw seafood and street food.
  • Island-hopping requires advance planning: ferry seats can sell out, and boat schedules may change with sea conditions. Leave generous time between flights, ferries and onward transfers.
  • Access to some islands and tribal or protected areas is restricted. Do not approach protected tribal communities or enter areas marked as off-limits.

Safety and health

  • Mosquito-borne illnesses including dengue and Zika occur in India. Use repellent, wear long sleeves and trousers, and stay in accommodation with screens or air-conditioning where possible. (cdc.gov)
  • After heavy rain, avoid floodwater, muddy soil and contaminated fresh water, and cover cuts or burns, because of melioidosis risk. (cdc.gov)
  • Drink sealed bottled or properly treated water, check that bottle seals are intact, and be cautious with ice, raw salads and street food. Wash or sanitise hands before eating. (wikivoyage.org)
  • A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is conditionally required for travellers aged 9 months or older arriving from, or transiting through, countries considered at risk for yellow fever transmission. It is not required when travelling directly from the United States or other countries without such risk. (cdc.gov)
