Best time to visit Ayers Rock

The best time to visit Uluru is from May to September, when conditions are dry and daytime temperatures suit walking, although winter nights can fall below freezing. April and October are reasonable alternatives, but afternoons may be hot; November to March is less comfortable because of high temperatures, intense UV and occasional thunderstorms.

Brief

  • Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is remote. Plan flights, accommodation, park entry and transport well in advance, and allow substantial time between the airport, Ayers Rock Resort and the park.
  • Climbing Uluru is permanently prohibited. Base walks, ranger-led cultural experiences and Kata Tjuta trails are the appropriate alternatives.
  • The new Uluru Kakararra Trail offers a multi-day route between Uluru and Kata Tjuta, but it is available only through the authorised operator and is designed for the April-September trekking season.
  • Look for Australian bush foods such as quandong, wattleseed, lemon myrtle, native pepper and kangaroo on resort and tour menus.

Safety and health

  • Outback hikes require careful water planning. Carry more water than you expect to need, avoid setting out in the hottest part of the day, and follow park advice if conditions change. Remote tracks and roads can have limited mobile coverage; if a vehicle breaks down, stay with it for shade and visibility. (wikivoyage.org)
  • Ultraviolet exposure can be intense even in cooler months. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen, protective clothing and a broad-brimmed hat, and seek shade around midday. (wikivoyage.org)
  • Mosquitoes can transmit Ross River virus and, mainly in northern and central Queensland, dengue. Use repellent and cover exposed skin, although these risks are less characteristic of the dry Uluru area. (cdc.gov)
  • Melioidosis is mainly a northern Australia risk. Avoid muddy water, floodwater and disturbed soil after heavy rain, and cover cuts and wounds. (cdc.gov)
  • A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers aged one year or older arriving from a country with yellow-fever transmission risk, including qualifying airport transits. It is not required for direct travel from the United States. (cdc.gov)

Recent News

  • 27 August 2026: The Uluru Kakararra Trail, a new roughly 40-mile multi-day trek linking Uluru and Kata Tjuta, is now operating through an exclusive guided package. Departures are expected through September, so availability may be limited for late-season visitors. (outsideonline.com | nationalgeographic.com)
