## Brief

- South Ossetia is a de facto state with limited tourist infrastructure. Access is generally via Russia, while entry from Georgia is not a normal tourist route and may require prior authorization. Check entry rules carefully before travelling.
- Tskhinvali and other settlements have limited banking, telecommunications, accommodation and transport services. Carry essential medicines, backup power and sufficient cash.
- Bottled water is advisable, and medical facilities may have limited equipment and supplies.
- Try local Ossetian cuisine, especially **fydzhin** meat pie, **walibah** cheese pie and other traditional Ossetian pies.
- The inauguration of President-elect Marat Kambolov is scheduled for **September 30, 2026**, and may lead to local ceremonies, crowding and access restrictions in central Tskhinvali. ([ossetia.news-pravda.com](https://ossetia.news-pravda.com/en/russia/2026/09/20/27759.html))

## Safety and health

- The political and security situation remains sensitive. Avoid military facilities, checkpoints, demonstrations and political discussions, and do not photograph security personnel or infrastructure. Unexploded ordnance and landmines may remain outside populated areas, so stay on established roads and use local guidance.
- Tick bites can transmit Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and sand-fly bites can transmit leishmaniasis. Use insect repellent, wear covering clothing and check for ticks after rural activities. ([cdc.gov](https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/georgia))
- Medical care, medicines, heating, electricity, plumbing and water services can be unreliable. Bring a sufficient supply of personal medication and use bottled water. ([wikivoyage.org](https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/South_Ossetia))
