Brief
- Northern Cyprus drives on the left and uses the Turkish lira. Check whether rental-car insurance covers crossings between Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus, as cover is often limited.
- The island remains divided. Crossing points, entry permissions and document requirements can vary, particularly if you enter through Ercan or a northern port and later plan to cross south. Verify the latest rules before travel (

- Try local specialities including hellim (halloumi), şeftali kebabı, Turkish-Cypriot meze, molehiya and Turkish coffee. Local wines and zivania are also widely available.
- Avoid photographing military sites, border installations or checkpoints. Keep identification documents with you near the buffer zone.
Safety and health
- Leishmaniasis is transmitted by sand-fly bites. Use insect repellent, wear covered clothing in the evening and consider screened or air-conditioned accommodation (

- Healthcare is primarily private. Arrange travel insurance that explicitly covers Northern Cyprus or the TRNC, and bring enough regular medication, spare supplies and prescriptions for the whole trip (
- Avoid relying on the Kyrenia-Tasucu sea route until operators and authorities confirm its safety and operating status following the recent ferry disaster. Check with the carrier before travelling to the port.

- Ferry disaster, latest update on 4 September: The FiloJet ferry capsized shortly after leaving Kyrenia for Taşucu on 30 August.
